Unlike international trade, which has been widely institutionalised under the World Trade Organisation (WTO), international investment still lacks global or multinational consistency. When multinational corporations make investments in different countries, they are affected by the domestic laws and policies of each government, and how to protect the investments of foreign investors in the host country has become an important issue.
